The letters on the weathered sign over the door of the Gonzalez home read "Artelar," a blend of the Spanish words for art and loom.
The "art of the loom" consumes the Gonzalez family. Together with what they grow in the fields, weaving is their major source of income. It is also a source of identity and pride.
A majority of the people in Teotitlan del Valle are involved in weaving. Decades ago it was a traditionally male activity, but now both women and men weave.
